The liberator of Bangladesh
The Statesman - Kolkata,India
AMONG the most celebrated photographs in India’s military archives is that of the surrender at Dhaka in 1971. Holding centre stage at the ceremony recorded in that picture is Lt -Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora, and rightly so. Not merely because it was to him that Lt Gen A Niazi, head of the Pakistan army in erstwhile East Pakistan submitted the instrument of surrender, but because it was under his command that the Indian land forces in the Eastern Theatre fought the war that give birth to a new, independent nation.
